We’ve all been there. We hit the snooze button more times than we’d like to admit, hurry to get ready, fight our way through morning traffic, and eat a granola bar at our desk. In many of our busy lives, it is rare that we stop to take a minute and create a morning routine that nourishes our mind and body.
Perhaps you already have a perfect morning routine nailed down, but could use some new ideas. Or maybe the paragraph above sounds all too familiar and you’re looking for a more balanced and nourishing way to start your days. Creating new routines is never easy. Especially in the morning because the sheets are so cozy -- and hey, checking emails from bed is just convenient!
No matter what your routine looks like today, here are six solutions that will help you to create a morning routine that will soon become your most favorite self-care ritual.
1. Give yourself plenty of time to rise.
Your alarm goes off. Instead of hitting the snooze button and going back to sleep, maybe hit it once (baby steps!) but lay with your eyes open. Take a big, deep breath, stretch your arms above your head, and give yourself a smile. Lying in bed also gives you a chance to meditate or reflect on your day ahead. When the alarm goes off again, you’ll feel much more prepared to hop out of bed.
2. Write down three things you’re grateful for and three things you’re excited about for that day.
Practicing gratitude and feeling excitement first thing in the morning is a great way to set the tone for the rest of the day. Make it a point to sit down and write these “gratefuls” and “exciteds” out. Make them short and sweet - less than one sentence - and feel that gratitude and excitement throughout your whole day!
3. Make a mindful, nourishing breakfast.
You may not have time every morning to make a delicious continental breakfast - and that’s ok! For breakfast, it is all about how mindful you are of making your meal. Even if it is just a bag of instant oatmeal, appreciate the way the bag crinkles when you open it, hear the whistle of the kettle as the hot water boils, and enjoy the sweet aroma of your breakfast all before you take that first bite. It makes the meal special - even if it isn’t “homemade”.
4. Drink water and get your nutrients.
Starting off your day hydrated and with your nutrients is the perfect way to set the tone for the whole day. Try a warm glass of water with lemon and Balance the Superfood Shot to start the day off on the right foot.
5. Don’t check your phone.
For many of us, we wake up and the first thing we do is roll over and reach for our phone. Instead of mindlessly scrolling for 30 minutes, make yourself finish your morning routine and if you still have time then you can reward yourself with a bit of screen time.
6. Move your body.
Whether its a quick 5 minute stretch and sun salutation or a 5 mile jog, get your blood pumping in the morning. Moving your body, even just a bit, helps the blood get circulating and helps you feel more alert throughout the day.
Mindful mornings centered around self-care allows us to nurture not only our body but also our mind. A good routine helps combat burnout and creates a happier more sustainable life. We hope these morning routine ideas help to make your life more balanced and successful!
